Aarakocra
Key Similarities with Faerun's Version
- Aarakocra originally hail from the Elemental Plane of Air, having come to Adra some time during the early 1st Era.
- They tend to be rather skinny, with Aarakocra who become too overweight becoming grounded in some cases.
- They commonly exhibit a natural impulse towards certain typically avian behaviors, such as a drive to groom their feathers throughout the day, using very particular movements, gestures, and chirps to communicate with one another, and a strong prey drive (for some kinds of aarakocra). Aarakocra even molt, partially molting once a year, and having a full molt after adolescence.
Key Differences with Faerun's Version
- While Aarakocra originally come from the Plane of Air, now there exist two mostly separate groups of Aarakocra, those who have lived on the material plane for countless generations, and those who remain in the Plane of Air to this day. The Aarakocran Culture background is meant for those from the Material Plane, but could easily work for those from the Plane of Air as well.
- The physical appearance of an aarakocra is based on which of the four conclaves on the material plane your ancestors originally hail from (while now there is a lot of movement between the four conclaves, in the ancient times, there was not): The Western Conclave are traditionally birds of prey (e.g. hawks, owls, etc.), the Eastern Conclave are traditionally tropical birds (e.g. parrots, toucans, etc.), the Southern Conclave are traditionally waterfowl (e.g. ducks, swans, etc.), and the Northern Conclave are traditionally non-migratory northern birds (e.g. Cardinals, Titmouses, etc.). Aarakocra can often appear as other kinds of birds, such as pidgeons or hummingbirds, but these appearances aren't associated with a particular conclave.
- Male and Female aarakocra do not differ in the vibrancy of their color or plumage. Both muted and bright colors are common among all aarakocra.
