Bugbear
Key Similarities with Faerun's Version
- As their name partially suggests, bugbears appear to be like goblins, but covered completely with thick hair or fur, though not usually as thick as an actual bear. They are large, muscular, and lanky, with a torso that sometimes looks small compared with the length of their arms and lengths. The length of the arms might be what the "bug" part of their name comes from.
- Bugbears, while being physically commanding, are also unexpectedly stealthy. In combat, they tend to thrive on ambushes, rather than taking the most direct approach.
Key Differences with Faerun's Version
- Bugbears, to those unfamiliar with them in person, are considered a kind of boogeyman. Stories exist across Adra of bugbears hiding under beds, in closets, in the dark - the hairs standing up on the back of your neck, the tingles at the end of your fingertips - these are signs of the bugbear, or so the stories go. Real bugbears are not usually so devious, though they can be quite frightening.
- Among other goblinoids, bugbears are rarely respected enough to lead - instead, they are usually used in raiding parties separate from the normal goblin warbands.
