Changeling
Key Similarities with Eberron's Version
- Changelings are strange magical creatures, rumored by the populace of many towns to be shape changing demons, doppelgangers, who seek to infiltrate the lives of innocent people, and replace them. They are often targeted by governments who need a boogeyman to blame their problems on, often with disastrous consequences for actual changelings.
Key Differences with Eberron's Version
- Changelings are not a race in their own right, but rather are like a half-race. So, changelings come in many shapes and sizes, appearing as the race of their father.
- Changelings are the product of trickery and seduction, the children of hags and a mortal father. Usually the fathers are dead when the child is born, and very rarely do the hags actually take care of their children. Because of this, changelings are almost always grow up as orphans, or might be raised by the father's family. Their parentage leaves them with the tell-tale physical sign of their changeling blood - one eye the color of their mother's, the other eye the color of their father's.
- While renowned and feared for their ability as shapechangers, in reality most changelings cannot shapechange. Only particularly powerful changelings, or usually those gifted from a certain kind of hag mother, will ever have the ability to shapechange. Most however have some powers that do not naturally come to their father's race, and many may develop physical manifestations of this power on their body.
- While changelings might feel a call towards their hag ancestry, most are able to live lives that never come to intersect again with their foul parentage.
