Dragonborn

Key Similarities with Faerun's Version

  • Dragonborn are related to dragons, and take on certain aspects of them, either metallic, or chromatic. While they lack wings or a tail, they have scales the color of a certain dragon, and their own breath weapon matches the kind that would normally be associated with that dragon type. Furthermore, it doesn't seem that a dragonborn's scale color holds the same tendency towards law or chaos, evil or good, that is the case of true dragons.
  • Dragonborn traditionally live in clans, essentially large interrelated families similar to those of the dwarves. These clans make up the most basic fabric of relationships between dragonborn.
  • Dragonborn tend towards strict codes of honor, either enforced by their clan relationships, or by their duties to the state. Even dragonborn who are raised in completely different cultures to Aegyri will find their natural inborn tendencies driving them towards some kind of code - this makes dragonborn that seem to lack such a code of honor to be seen by their fellows as "Snakeborn," referring to the dragonborn's ancient enemy, the Yuan-ti.

Key Differences with Faerun's Version

  • Dragonborn are not directly descended from the dragons, at least not in the normal sense - instead, Dragonborn constitute one branch of the ancient race known as Dragonkin, a race created by sorcery, a melding of dragon flesh with that of the elves. Dragonborn represent the closest living race to the original dragonkin, which is why they bear ancestries which relate to specific kinds of dragons. Kobolds are slightly more removed, and Lizardfolk, the furthest removed. The Dragonkin evolved into these different races relatively quickly, as the sorcery which created them also continuously caused them to transform and mutate for thousands of years until they had diverged into the three main branches.
  • While dragonborn do live in clans, since the establishment of the Aegyri Dragon Kingdom, the old clan structures have slowly given way to military hierarchy, political bureaucracy, and wealthy aristocracy, as the dragonborn in Aegyr and its surrounding countryside have found themselves elevated in the new society, and as the ruling dragon family has sought to eliminate any structures outside of their control. Still, to many dragonborn in Aegyr, and most dragonborn outside of the Dragon Kingdom, the way of clans still rules supreme.
