Gith
Key Similarities with Faerun's Version
- The Gith are a race of humanoids whose history is shrouded in a good deal of mystery - some believe they came into the world in whatever way the humans first did, while others wonder if they came from beyond the stars. Whatever the ancient forerunners were, the gith of recorded history became captured by the Mind Flayers, and their whole race was enslaved. Eventually, they broke free from their bondage, and split into two distinct cultural groups. See Githyanki Culture and Githzerai Culture for more information.
- The Gith have a very alien appearance when compared with humans, for example. They have skin that is yellow or yellow-green, and highly leathery in texture, with black eyes. Their skull is elongated, and their ears are pointed, and have serrated angles on the backs of them.
- The Gith, in all places and times, are chiefly opposed to all things aberrant in nature. The Mind Flayers, the Slaadi, the Aboleth, and all others like them, are the enemies of the Gith - it is said that even Gith that would be raised away from their history and culture would still hold a hate for such creatures in their heart.
Key Differences with Faerun's Version
- Time moves strange in the realms of the Gith. While the above lifespan is how long a Gith would live when placed on the Prime Material Plane, the Githyanki on the Astral Plane age at 1/10th the rate they would elsewhere. However, their frequent raids into other planes means their lifespan is highly variable. The Githzerai of Limbo age at a rate that is wildly unpredictable, experiencing different ages at different rates and in a non-linear order. As such, it is nearly impossible to actually understand the lifespan of a Githzerai in limbo, although it is finite.
Subraces of Gith
- Githyanki: Those of the Gith who took a more martial path, and now inhabit the Astral Sea. They act as interdimensional pirates or raiders, taking plunder from almost every world in Adra, using their Astral Ships and Warpstones to create portals big enough to move small raiding fleets through. They are famous also for raising and training Red Dragons to fight for them, and the most elite among them become Dragon Riders.
- Githzerai: Those of the Gith who took a more meditative path, and now inhabit the plane of Limbo. The Githzerai cultivated the powers of their minds, and live now in monasteries in the plane of time. For the most part, they watch the passing of the world around them there, and see the violent behavior of the Githyanki as thuggish and simple-minded. Their own goals are to reach a state of enlightenment.
