Halfling
Key Similarities with Faerun's Version
- Halflings are small humanoids, which have a strong resemblance to humans. They are characterized by their slightly awkward proportions, sometimes resulting in shorter arms or a larger head. They tend not to grow facial hair as readily as humans do, but are able to grow it to some degree. Their most characteristic physical trait are their feet, hard on the bottom, able to step on sharp rocks without pain, and thick tufts of hair, almost fur-like, which grow on the topsides of the feet. In the countryside, most halflings wear no footwear at all, and in the cities, sandals are all the rage.
- Halflings seem to have a kind of innate love of the land they live on, the things that grow their, their families, their hearth, and home. These feelings can tie them to the places they live more strongly than other races.
Key Differences with Faerun's Version
- Halflings are indeed associated with green tilled earth, pipe smoke, and good drink by the peoples of Adra. However, they are also associated with political intrigue, lavish luxury, and martial vigor just as much. The halflings of Adra are native to the Green Valley, a low-lying fertile coast region just to the north of the Twin Lotus Rivers. There, well-over a thousand years ago, they built a civilization that produced the greatest armies ever seen in Adra outside of the halls of dwarves or glades of elves. To this day, the associations between Halflings, and their most famous of empires, Arissia, is inescapable.
- Can be found throughout Adra Majoris and Adra Minoris, in all of the territories where the Arissian Empire rule today, or where they once ruled. While most halflings live in the lands which the empire still controls, there are many halflings still living in the former provinces as well, though usually as minorities in the population.
- The ancient history of the halflings is poorly understood - the early halflings had little reason to keep detailed records, as opposed to halflings today. Still, it is believed, given their distinct similarity to humans, that halflings are of the same stock, and that at some point in the long forgotten past, the two races had a common source, whatever that might be.
Subraces of Halfling
- Lightfoot Halfling: These tend to make up the halflings which live in the metropolitan areas of Adra. Making up the majority of artisans, and the nobility, lightfoot halflings tend to be more refined, prim and proper as it were, when compared with stout halflings. Their gentile nature can be known to translate well, when combined with the physiology of a halfling, to remaining as stealthy as possible.
- Stout Halfling: These tend to make up the halflings which live in the countryside and smaller settlements, with bodies much more accommodated to hard labor than their lightfoot cousins. Stout halflings also tend to be a little bigger and more comely looking, and due to their physical qualities, were traditionally the recruiting stock of halflings for the Arissian army.
