Hobgoblin

Key Similarities with Faerun's Version

  • Hobgoblins are one of the three races of the goblinoid family. They are the middle of the three in terms of size, being smaller than bugbears, but larger than goblins. They tend to have green shades of skin, though shades of brown, blue, grey, or purple are not uncommon either. They will usually have a broader and flatter forehead than goblins, though their skull will usually be more proportional to the rest of their body. They grow more hair than goblins do, both on their head, their face, and their body, though they are not as nearly as hairy as bugbears. They are basically the same size as humans.
  • Hobgoblins are usually, historically anyway, the leaders of goblin warbands and goblin armies. They also usually make up the more elite branch of any goblinoid force that they fight with. Their longer age, more fit fighting form, and slightly more stable temperament all push them towards these positions within the goblinoid culture. Because of this association, and because of their association with regimentation and discipline, hobgoblins away from their native lands can often find lucrative work in mercenary companies, or as the sword bearer for a feudal lord.

Key Differences with Faerun's Version

  • While goblins and bugbears must deal with a constant stigma in many of the civilizations in Adra, particularly those in Adra Majoris and Kelior, hobgoblins seem to escape much of their brethren's reputation. In Zaltia, hobgoblins are well known for their raids, hated, and feared, outside of that land, and the further from it, hobgoblins are often respected, or perhaps thought of as a strange curiosity. Some think hobgoblins are some race of orc, or otherwise something entirely different. This means more hobgoblins will move outside of goblin lands than their other goblinoid kin.
  • Hobgoblins are naturally very warm-blooded kith, and usually do better in cool climates than in warmer ones. While it is not dangerous for their health to be in hot climates, hobgoblins will usually find themselves uncomfortable in such places, and will likely seek ways to cool down in their free-time. Hobgoblin mercenaries, because of this, are usually utilized in cooler parts of Adra.
