Kalashtar

Key Similarities with Eberron's Version

  • A Kalashtar is not so much its own race, but rather a kind of people whose spirits have been bonded or infused with a spirit from the plane of dreams. To the uninitiated, Kalashtar look like regular members of their race, with the bonding of the dream spirit, called a Kalashton, effecting one's spirit and mind more than one's body.
  • A Kalashtar does not experience their bonded Kalashton as a kind of separate voice in their head, or like a ghost that follows them. Instead, the two are truly paired - their minds are as one, and they think as one. There is a sense in which they cannot be fully separated, conceptually at least, once they are paired in this way. Furthermore, those who go through the process of this bonding will be forever changed by the event, being both aware of the new spirit within them, but also becoming that spirit. When it comes to the two, it is not "we," but "I."

Key Differences with Eberron's Version

  • Kalashtar are not only humans, but instead can be of any Kith race. No race seems any more or any less able to bond with a Kalashton, though some individuals may be more or less suited personally.
  • Physically, the only real visual sign that one is a Kalashtar is a subtle one. When looking close, and directly into the eyes of the Kalashtar, one can see a very thin band of white lite that rims around the edges of the pupil. It is so small that in normal light, it can only be seen  very close. It might become more pronounced in dark lighting. It is believed that this light is the light of the Kalashton.
  • One must live in peace and meditation on the holy Isle of Dreams for a year and a day, and this will allow them to pair with a Kalashton. If a Kalashtar stays away from the Isle of Dreams for ten years, then their Kalashton will leave them, and they shall cease to be a Kalashtari.
  • Kalashtar often seem stoic, meditative, and people of few words. This is in great contrast to their Kalashton partners, who are chaotic and free spirited, constantly driving them to fun, mischief, and adventure. Kalashtar, almost innately from the moment they become a bonded pair, seem to act as a stable anchor to the free spirits of the Kalashton, while the Kalashton bring a spark of creativity and ingenuity that is their nature.
