Mackinac? Mackinaw?

The Ojibwe/Odawa peoples named the island "Mitchimakinak" meaning "big turtle." The French used their own version of the original pronunciation and named it Michilimackinac. However, the English shortened it to the present name: "Mackinac."

Despite its spelling, the locals know its [Mack-i-naw] Island. So do the cats.
