A hypermatter reactor igniter—or HMRI— is a key component in a starship's hyperdrive, without which, initiating the jump to hyperspace was impossible. Once installed, the HMRI needs to go through a warm-up cycle before coming online. Once online, however, the hyperdrive can engage automatically.
