Calliope - Session 41

Song
Real Heroes1
(Tune: a light-hearted call to arms.)

Some are built
Of muscle and steel,
Others of magic and might.
But you need not a sword.2
A bow, nor a spear,
To fight for what is right.

Carried in your heart, not your hands3
In kind words and gentle actions,
Outside of duty, glory and fame.4

Some are made
Of their kindness and love,
Others of sacrifice.
They need not deeds sung,
Nor statues carved,
To step up and pay the price.

Carried in your heart, not your hands
In kind words and gentle actions,
Outside of duty, glory and fame.

Some are shaped,
By the duties they bear,
Others find their cause.
But all it takes,
Is to care for the future,
Not for the applause.5

Footnotes

I spoke to Sulla about what it is to be a hero. He seems… hesitant about his own future. I get the feeling he can’t decide between enjoying what he has and wanting to do something more. I told him that there is more than one way to be heroic: it is not all swords and magic. In fact, with his money and influence, I wonder if he could far surpass the good we are capable of… a modern-day Adonis. Albeit with a little less muscle.

If anything can prove that not all Heroes wield swords, it was the council meeting yesterday. Gaius was forced out of the city not by might, but by words. Though... certainly not my own! Helikaon’s speech left me speechless. And when I finally could, I ended up being maybe a little too effusive, babbling away like a fledgling! I was honestly relieved when he came to find me a little later, unfazed by my enthusiasm. We actually ended up spending the rest of the day together, playing music on the cliff above the Siren’s Roost until the sun went down.

Yesterday was a good day. I think it might be my favourite since this whole journey began.

I'd have preferred that Sulla’s change of heart came from, you know, respecting my wishes rather than from following his father’s… but I suppose it is ultimately the same result. He was actually rather pleasant to spend time with, without the pressure of trying to persuade him that I wasn’t interested hanging over me!

While I was being broken up with (if you can call it that when I wasn’t interested in the first place!) the others spoke to Taran about the Lady of Coins. It sounds like it went well and the others have made some sort of deal with him. Hopefully we will be successful in our endeavour and I will be able to meet Taran next time  - it would be nice to see what the man currently in charge of Adonis’ legacy is like.

We now need to try and find the Lady of Coins. Braz is scoping out the tavern we are starting our search in with magic, and then we are going to go there to try and get some info. I’m actually kind of nervous - but what’s the worst that could happen?
