Calliope - Session 02

Song
A Winner's Game
(Tune: A strong, heavy beat accompanied by an energetic melody.)

To win a Game is all well and good,
But the smartest amongst Gods and mortals know,
That all is needed is to remove the pieces
And you needn’t land a blow.

With this in mind, so Sydon went,1
To stop his daughter’s plans.
For if the Game he could prevent,
She could not win, or try.

So when our Heroes stumbled,
Into Versi’s domain,
In a fight they found themselves,
With need to join the fray.2

Attacks and magic they did wield,
And soon their foes did fall.3
But in their haste they found concealed,
A trap to thwart them all.

Mean tricks, of swords and words.4
Quickly dispatched, but not without pain.
Weakened, the heroes pushed bravely on,
Before their power might deign to wane.5

Then face to face they came about,
A monster-witch of emerald blue.
A frightful beast, whose looks belied,
Her rather entrancing hue.

So frightful was her strange visage,
Our heroes stopped their tracks.6
Unable to push forward,
Unwilling to go back.

Yet, a few broke free her spell,
And with might, and magic too:
They slew the hag, stopped her schemes,
And Versi was free anew.

So the deed was done,
The Game begun.
For our heroes,
Now tried and true.7

Footnotes

1Sydon wanted us nowhere near Versi. I suppose that is proof that she brought together the right people. He probably wouldn’t have bothered if we were not a threat.

2There was… a lot of death. I have seen some of Versi’s attendants briefly over the years, but I don’t know them well. They seem to change a lot and I can never really keep track. But I think I recognised some faces among the bodies. I couldn’t really bring myself to look closer though, and I had Versi to think about... But it doesn’t really seem fair. They weren’t fighters: what gives Sydon’s soldiers the right?

3I like Theo. He seems like a kind man. But when it comes to fighting, he is maybe not as careful with his magic as he is with his words. He sort of... caught some of our allies in the crossfire. Helikaon seemed less than pleased; and I suppose he had a right to be, considering he took the brunt of the damage.

Honestly, everyone’s skills are very impressive, but we are maybe a little out of sync? We’ll work it out with time though. I’m certain of it.To be fair, for their part, Braz, Hippofilius and Helikaon already seem to work together fairly well. I suppose they are used to fighting?

4I tried to pick the lock to get down to the cave, but I failed miserably. It is not a surprise I suppose, I haven’t used these lockpicks in… well, actually, I can’t remember ever using them. I’m pretty sure they are mine though. I don’t know how to explain it, but they feel ‘right’ in my hands. I think I’m just rusty? Ah, I... hope I wasn’t a thief before I met Versi...

Unfortunately, my failure meant that we fell into a trap when the other’s tried to retrieve the key. I got pretty badly hurt and so did Theo - he was on death’s door. I helped him the best I could, but I’m no healer. Luckily Proteus had some potions that mended the worst of it.

5Past the locked door there was another, this time with a riddle. And past that was the cave. And screaming. I think the others wanted to stop and assess things. They were wary of more traps. But I wasn’t really thinking enough to be afraid. Luckily, Helikaon was just as determined as I was; and when we pressed ahead, so did the others.

6For anyone reading this in the future, I am not exaggerating. She was not a pretty woman - magically so. In the same kind of way that nymphs pull people towards them, she pushed them away. Her looks were far from her ugliest feature though. That award goes to the pure unbridled glee she took in torture. The image of that poor acolyte will haunt my dreams for a long time yet.

7We even swore an Oath to bind us as a group! Helikaon seemed a little reluctant, but agreed in the end. He is a little hard to read, but I think he is struggling to trust us. I suppose I can’t blame him - this is a lot for anyone to take in and they don’t have the benefit of knowing Versi well enough to trust what she says like I do.
