These gloves are designed to inflict as little injury as possible to one's knuckles while inflicting as much damage as possible to the opponent. This allows "safely" knocking someone out without killing them. The gloves do not work on robots, as they are inherently immune to fatigue damage. The gloves will instead add additional damage to each blow to compensate for the lack of fatigue damage.
