Troglodyte

Monster

It is said that when people are robbed of the Sun and forced to dwell in perpetual darkness for generations, the eyes of their offspring close and never open again. Gradually, they transform into something truly accursed; they become troglodytes. These were the ancient humans who chose never to leave their primeval caves.

Appearances

Colorless and eyeless gluttons they are, each discriminating against no flesh but their own rawboned selves. Though utterly blind and sensitive to bright lights, troglodytes are gifted with extraordinary smell, hearing, and taste, to the short extent of echolocation. While far-removed from contemporary civilizations, troglodytes were always as capable as humans then. They still make and use tools, wield weapons, and wear rags.

Tales of misfortune tell of encounters with intelligent troglodytes who can communicate in a complex language indecipherable to the common human ear, and likewise speak the tongues of the surface-dwellers. Rumors speak of great troglodyte kingdoms sprawled across cavernous systems miles beneath Thule's sunlit surface. But these are mere myths, and most people see no behavioral distinction between troglodytes and feral apes. After all, they are gaunt and hunchbacked, walking or climbing on all fours when in need of extra mobility. They may vary in size, but most are of skinny weight and stand no taller than human children of a dozen summers.
