The MiG-21 is the Soviet jet interceptor of the mid-1960s by excellence. It is currently the most important aircraft of this category in the Soviet Air Force, providing both an important armed deterrent and critical nuclear bomber interception capabilities; indeed, it is one of the few aircraft in the world which can stand toe-to-toe with NATO's best designs. Though there exist a few hundred earlier models, the MiG-23PFM is the most iconic in the mid-1960s, including a new radar and engine, as well as the capacity to use air-to-air missiles and an integrated gun pod. The first ones arrived at Oceanyka parallel to the Revolution and subsequent Soviet intervention; thanks to aid from the Warsaw Pact, the OPA Air Force has a significant inventory of these technological marvels, operating primarily with the First Interceptor Air Division.
