The L1A1 Self-Loading Rifle is a British redesign of the FN FAL battle rifle, its measurements in Imperial units rather than Metric. As such, while essentially the same rifle, many of its components are not compatible with the original FAL, creating enormous logistical problems when this isn't accounted for. Many ex-Commonwealth nations such as India or Oceanyka, owing to their industries having standardised on Imperial, bought a number of L1A1s, or produce them locally. In the latter, the L1A1 is the most common battle rifle, and easy to find in most gun markets. Beginning in 1958, the Oceanykan Council began introducing the L1A1 as the standard rifle of the Federal Army to replace the myriad of weapons it had acquired over the last two decades. However, the Revolution and subsequent reorganisation into the Oceanykan People's Army favoured the Soviet AK family of rifles.

One important difference between FN Herstal's original FAL and the L1A1 is that the latter is semi-automatic only.
