The 12.8cm PaK 44 was Germany's heaviest anti-tank weapon. Designed to defeat Soviet heavy and superheavy tanks, such as the TT series, the weapons were under the command of army-level anti-tank motorised battalions, able to respond to an alert of Soviet armoured attacks in any sector of the frontline. Though heavier than contemporary HEAT-firing cannons, the 12.8cm PaK 44 is still an extremely effective weapon in the modern battlefield, and was the basis for Rheinmetall's experimental 120mm smoothbore cannon of the early 1970s.
