The 82-BM-37 is the Soviet Union's standard medium mortar and has been so since before the Great Patriotic War. Like all other mortars of the era, it is a descendant of the French Brandt design. It does possess an extremely unique quirk; as it is an 82mm calibre weapon, it is capable of firing western 81mm shells with reduced accuracy, but the contrary is not possible. When German intelligence realised this, the nation began a program to manufacture more complicated ammunition which could not be fired from larger calibre barrels. The British MI-6 intervened, preventing a major industrial disaster, and produced a limited number of 81mm shells rigged to explode which were strategically placed in the frontline. Shortly after, reports of Soviet mortar teams using captured ammunition reduced drastically. As a Soviet weapon, it has been leased to its allies, including many factions within Oceanyka.
