The People's Republic of China is the most populous country on Earth. It is located in Eastern Asia, bordering a number of nations (most notably the DPRK, North Vietnam and the Soviet Union, all of which are its allies). Despite ample aid from the Soviet Union in the form of investments and technological transfer, China has not yet awakened its economic potential, mainly due to the decisions taken by Chairman Mao Zedong, who ruled the PRC from its creation until 1965 when the PLA and the CPC's "Modernist faction" took over. China under Chairman Deng Xiaoping has characterised itself by extremely rapid economic growth, a new wave of technocratic administrators, and endless modernisation initiatives in every sphere of life. Their primary geopolitical enemy is the Empire of Japan, with whom they have unresolved historical grievances. Western economists estimate that, should China's influence not be curbed or if they do not suffer from some calamity of chance, it will surpass the United States in the 1990s.
