The people of the Republic of Quintipoli are an enigma. Its name means "five nations" in a forgotten dialect of Pontic Greek, and refers to the major ethnic groups which make it up; Georgians, Ossetians, Armenians, Greeks and the mysterious Ostrogoths. The latter makes up much of Quintipoli's leadership, and though nominally pluriethnic and plurilinguistic, Ostrogoth is the language of government. They are led by President Thiudimer Amalung, a former officer of the Quintipoli Army. In reality it is an insurrectionary rump state, as much of its former territory is controlled by the Georgian SSR and the Armenian SSR, both autonomous republics of the Soviet Union. The original Kingdom of Quintipoli was created by the German Empire as part of the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, though its Austrian monarch proved unpopular and was ousted within a couple of years. Resisting all attempts at Soviet infiltration, the nascent nation was finally invaded during World War II, and its most ardent supporters began a decades-long guerilla war. Quintipoli's leadership is firmly allied with the west, from whom it receives occasional support in the form of arms and money.
