The Republic of China, better known for the territory it occupies as Taiwan, is a country located off the coast of mainland China. It is led by President Chiang Kai-Shek, China's disgraced generalissimo. Taiwan is the last bastion of the Kuomintang, China's nationalist party created by Dr. Sun Yat-Sen which fought off both Mao Zedong's guerillas and the seemingly undefeatable Japanese Empire. Despite receiving enormous American aid in the form of weapons, advisors, ammunition and intelligence, it was thoroughly defeated and the party dispersed. Following Japan's surrender to the United States, it was believed that creating a Chinese "mirror state" would destabilise the PRC, and there could even be hope of reclaiming China as a democratic ally. Key surviving Kuomintang figures, most of them in exile, were called to form a new government. This is considered the "Taiwan phase" of the ROC. Ever since the Kuomintang's exile, Chiang Kai-Shek has embarked on a campaign against government corruption and inefficiency, as well as rapid economic growth, a significant improvement over his previous management of China. Taiwan is part of the Pacific Containment Pact, but unlike its close relations to South Korea and the United States, cordial relationships with Japan have not been restored. Its economy is noted for having a very strong electronics industry, competing with South Korea.
