At the outbreak of WW2, Germany did not possess enough combat vehicles to face the combined forces of France, Danubia, the Balkan states and the Soviet Union. Many civilian vehicles were requisitioned and used to move cannon, primarily anti-tank guns, around the battlefield. The primary user of this tactic was the Volkssturm, a "second army" of mobilised citizens, which designated these vehicles as "assault trucks", but Anglophone media preferred the already established term "gun truck".
