Tjurunga are oblong objects made of polished wood, stone, metal or any other material, intricately decorated and carved with stories (either mythical or historical). They could be considered a form of totem that is owned by an individual, and considered sacred or historically important. Possessing one is important in Aboriginal culture, as the tjurunga is a physical representation of the owner and their family. Also considered by the faithful as magical items which can be harnessed for shamanic rituals and ceremonies.
