Ultisol, commonly known as red clay soil, is a type of dirt characterised by a high concentration of iron oxides amongst other minerals, but poor organic content. This makes it unsuitable for agriculture without the addition of fertilisers. Red clay is the most common type of soil, covering most of the vast and searing Outback.
