The M14 rifle is a selective-fire battle rifle that fires 7.62×51mm NATO ammunition from a 20-round detachable box magazine. It is gas-operated and has a rotating bolt. This weapon is largely based on the venerable M1 Garand, but has several improvements, such as a flash suppressor, a pistol grip and a fire mode selector switch. It is, as of the mid-1960s, the standard combat rifle of the United States Army, and is being used in various additional roles such as a sniper rifle, marksman rifle and squad automatic weapon. Thousands have been smuggled to Oceanyka, especially by Viet Cong agents who sell the fine American weapons down under and use these profits to purchase cheaper surplus arms.
