Alfonso de Albuquerque's Expedition

Oceanykan History - Precolonial

Oceanykan traders had heard the news; a wholly alien empire, whose soldiers had sailed from across the world, had conquered the legendary Spice Islands (the Moluccas). However, it was most unexpected when Alfonso de Albuquerque, the Portuguese explorer who had conquered Goa, showed up with a squadron of warships and 2,000 soldiers-at-arms. Alfonso had been made aware of Oceanyka's existence by Malay traders, and seeking to expand the Portuguese Empire, set up a fortress at the Tiwi Islands. Seeing their rightful land being occupied by a foreign realm, important leaders from Old Farenday (Darwin) rallied a number of ships and soldiers to counter-attack. Though they were sorely beaten back at sea, a number of raiding parties successfully disembarked, waging a brutal irregular war on the Portuguese. After two months of bitter fighting, Alfonso de Albuquerque and Old Farenday's leaders met, agreeing on the following conditions; Portugal could keep their fortress, Borda da Terra, and build a port in the Tiwi Islands. However, the islands themselves would remain part of Old Farenday.

This expedition was Oceanyka's first contact with colonialism. Over hundreds of years, trade with Europe and Asia would foster the birth of a new city within the TIwi Islands, which would later dominate northern Australia's seas; New Farenday, now only known as Farenday.
