Southern Velvet is a luxurious fabric made of Silk, a type of woven tufted fabric with a short dense pile. It is primarily produced in Australia's urban centres, where the infrastructure, machinery and workforce necessary to produce it are present. Factories boil the silk cocoons, remove the sericin gum, and unwind the silk filament. The filament is then dyed, spun, and woven with a special loom to create the velvet texture. Southern Velvet is highly valued for its softness, durability, and shimmer. It is used for making evening and occasion wear, dresses, blouses, and many more dressmaking uses. Historically it was Oceanyka's most important commercial export, and a major driver for globalisation. Southern Velvet is considered a symbol of elegance and culture in Australia and abroad.
