The Hawker Typhoon was a British fighter-bomber that was developed by Hawker Aircraft during the Second World War. It was intended to be an interceptor, but it faced several design problems and never fully met this requirement. It was powered by a Napier Sabre engine that produced around 2,200 horsepower and drove a four-bladed propeller. The Typhoon had a maximum speed of 663 km/h and a range of 821 km. It was armed with four 20mm Hispano autocannons and could carry up to 907 kg of bombs or rockets. The Typhoon was the only RAF fighter that could match French and Soviet interceptors at low altitude, and it became one of the most successful ground-attack aircraft of the war. It first flew in February 1940, but it did not enter service until September 1941, being used by the Republican Air Force and a number of allied forces.
