The Wright R-975 Whirlwind is an American 9-cylinder, air-cooled radial engine widely used in various military applications during World War II. With a displacement of 16L, it was capable of producing between 350-450 hp depending on the variant. Initially developed for aircraft, the R-975 became a key powerplant for armoured vehicles, most notably the M4A1 Sherman medium tank. Its compact, durable design and ability to run in harsh conditions made it ideal for both aviation and ground applications. While not the most powerful tank engine of the era, its reliability and ease of maintenance were vital to the success of American armoured forces in World War II.
