Fence/smuggle goods in/between major cities. At some point they came across an item of mystical alignment and during their investigation of what the item was, it activated enough that a sympathetic outsider came, saw this individual who had lost their way on the good path and using the remaining power in the artifact, forged a pact so they could have a means to reform this lost soul. Now having this pact and an increased sense of guilt doing morally dubious things, the character needed to go hide out somewhere away from the major thieves guilds (so he is not tempted to report them or incur their wrath if he stops accepting their goods to fence), and having pass through Quillpond a few times it seemed like the best choice. They are currently trying to figure out what he is going to do now: start from scratch as a legitimate business person, try to really go into their passion of investigating artifacts and magical lore, or something else.
