Eredrindë Pass

Fort Town

This settlement is not a pass as such, but a wide valley with a fortress built on a high prominence. This is the common mustering point for Archet and other inner baronies south of the capital.

The townsfolk are stern and wary. They put their faith in passwords and gates. The town is high walled, as is the keep - but so are many neighborhoods, markets, and even inns, which require their own passwords. The tradition began hundreds of years ago, during a plague known as the hollering flux. At the time, doctors believe plagues to have personifications, and it was supposed that passwords shared only among known individuals would slow the progress of the disease. As we know now, it was the increased isolation that created more time for solitary prayer that eradicated the flux. Passwords persist now as a social custom. Outsiders find it easiest to hire a guide. The odd thing is that once you're in, people let down their guards to an unexpected degree. Whereas a trespasser in Chalantion might be attacked on sight, people here mostly assume everyone is where they belong.

The city however remains in a posture of war. There are worse things than brigands in the forests, and more than a few dark tales come from that place. Armies of beastmen and more are said to prowl the old forest. Although hardly impoverished, the people here are most accustomed to austerity and stern rule. It is uncommon for even nobles to be fat.

Governor - Lord Duborne - Cregnac Keep

Cregnac Keep is huge, but it gives over much of its volume to defenses. Even were the walls torn asunder and the city burned, the keep could long stand against a superior foe, positioned as it is on a prominence. Its highest watchtowers can see halfway to Claystone Lake. Its beacons can be seen for miles around, and reinforcements are never far.

The Cregnac Guard is a detachment of knights and associated house soldiers under Dame Ingrid for the defense of the city and keep. There are 20 knights with their house soldiery serving as full-time road patrols. With the banners raised, as much as 3,000 soldiers can be gathered. Though few, these soldiers see regular action, and are some of the kingdom's most experienced veterans. Other fighting forces train and serve a fraction of the time, and rarely meet the enemy. The guard mounts monthly sorties to quell bandit armies in Midvale, and their outriders are constantly gathering intelligence in the area.
