Rite of Dayiman

Spell

In the course of a life spent upholding the laws of the Spice Rangers, a common lament is having reached the end of service (and life) with a library of unread scrolls and books. In order to continue this work and in hopes of greater attainments of scholarship, some elect to carry on in this world by fusing oneself with Mashay ChartamancyThe Rite of Dayiman is condoned in society on the basis that Mashaya make the wisdom of their honored dead accessible in perpetuity. The honored dead undertake the process if they feel they cannot face death just yet, for whatever reason. Most of the time they are buried with their books and scrolls, and spend years in quiet reflection.

The decedent is then buried with their scrolls and books. They are effectively immortal, but they tire very easily and (after a while) mostly wish for something new to read. Their descendents occasionally bring them new books in exchange for guidance or information. The living do not really interest them much; they are nostalgic and self-absorbed for the most part, rarely impressed with anything new.

Process

To begin, a blend of secret herbs are used to bind the soul within the body, while resins and enchanted scrolls are pulped together. The caster must continually smoke the binding herbs while fasting and encasing themselves with the resinous pulp. When finally the encasing is complete, the caster must be helped along by having their pipe filled with a toxin that ends their life. Ones very mind becomes words upon a page as the body becomes a scaffold of stiffened paper. Such beings are known as dhikrah, loosely translated as 'remembrance'.

Reagents

The spell requires ten enchanted scrolls, and 1,000 gold pennies worth of miscellaneous bug resins, cured herbs, and spices. Adept Spice Rangers are able to gather such things in 5 - Width weeks dedicated to wandering the Zerzuran Badlands. During this time it is customary to reflect on ones life and ponder whether they wish to continue. Scripture has examples of this, and it is very unseemly for others to try and influence the decision. It is considered to be a private discussion between Alsur and oneself.

Ancients

After a long while, dhikrah can often decide to move on. Most decide to die, while others seem to disappear entirely - to where, we have no report.
