The Black Chamber

Secret Society

Part solar occult order, part intelligence bureau, and part secret police. This clandestine order was instituted in reaction to Puka theological doctrine. After the votary put forth the doctrine that the sálarmosa is the critical lynchpin of free Púkafólk society, it became incumbent on The Black Chamber to maintain the secret of gunsmything. Their operatives are known as Unknown. To join their order is a life commitment ending in only one of two ways: death, or complete irreversible amnesia.

Yet as Puka wanderers became more enamored with the topside and more brazen, the mandate of The Black Chamber expanded in scope and ruthlessness. Not only do they keep tabs on topside wanderers and deal harshly with any oversteps, they have even found it necessary to delve into human society themselves in order to plant false impressions of Pukalore among the societies that pursue them.

The Unknown are adorned with white tattoos with cryptic designs of secrecy and magical power. They believe studying humanity's shadows gives insight into the holy light, just as shadows define and strengthen shapes. Their obscurantist rituals and cryptic tattoos form an unspoken language that hints at higher truths without expressing them directly. Using shadow magics, Unknown can communicate along hidden channels, and traverse the darkness between thoughts. They characterize the light of Karna as ultimate truth, casting shadows. Our world is one such shadow, they say.

Their arrival sparks dread. To The Black Chamber, their mandate of secrecy is an end that justifies the means. The votary and bureau of wrights always wonder if and when they will overstep their authority.
