Author's Notes

If you want to send a letter, there are a few different ways:

  • Only the largest cities have a post office, most of which do not circulate much further than in-city. In Orchalannon and the Athos Highlands area, the humble Drakelet is trained to carry letters and small parcels. In the The Mashayan Dominion, Mashay Chartamancy is widely used, and their messages are never outpaced. It helps when your letters can fold into a bird and fly away. The authorities use a special black paper with silver ink, and nobody dares intercept their coded messages. These messages are especially fast and tamper resistant. Some offices sell the use of it to private individuals.
  • In port towns, ship captains routinely accept letters and parcels for a small consideration, but the crew generally do not administer delivery personally. Messengers at the docks must accept whatever money is left by the captain, and mischance has left many a letter sitting on some forgotten pier.
  • Frequently itinerant travelers fund their journeys by carrying messages (and therefore are careful with their reputations). This type of delivery is cheapest, but slow and not sure.
  • You can often entrust a delivery with a member of the community (the innkeeper, the clerk of the general store, etc.) for them to hold a parcel for pickup. If it is not collected in time, it may be discarded or sold on.
