Server Rules

Most important rules!

  • Don’t be a jerk. Unless it’s in character, of course!
  • The Rule of CAWT. That stands for “Can And Want To.” That means, always always always RP if and only if you CAN and WANT TO. No more, no less. We would rather see you take some time away from the RP than press on and risk burning out.
  • Say something. If there is something going on that you don’t like, please say something immediately before it drives you to the point of getting upset. Feel free to reach out to staff if you need anything. We’re here to make sure everyone is having fun, so if you’re not, please let us know ASAP!
  • You must be 18+ to join.

Kanka is built by just the two of us. Support our quest and enjoy an ad-free experience for less than the cost of a fancy coffee. Become a member.

What you need to play

  • Join the Kanka campaign. Be willing to get used to how to navigate around our Kanka site.  This will be your source material for the game, and where all files are stored.  You must be able to access Kanka from every device you plan to RP with.  The mobile version of the site is pretty good! You will need to view Kanka frequently, and edit occasionally. It's all doable from phones, but we recommend using a computer for character creation.
  • You will also need to be able to edit Google Sheets from every device you play to RP from.  It won't be too intense; all you need to be able to do is pick things from a dropdown and type into an existing cell. You don't have to create pages or do formulas or anything like that, just fill in existing cells.
  • Join the Discord server. All RP will take place on Discord.  It will all be play-by-post, at a pace that is comfortable for all involved. If you haven't already, please be willing to learn how to get used to the "Threads" feature, which is relatively new. Each scene gets its own thread.
  • That's it!

Characters

Character Creation

You must use our Google Sheet to work on the mechanical parts of the character, and fill out a character page on Kanka. You can get started by going here: Character Creation.  We also have a role that you can select in the #role-choosies channel to let us know that you're serious about starting to work on a character.

Limited and Unlimited Players

These roles denote whether or not you can make additional characters yet.  Everyone starts out as "Limited" which means they can only have one character.  In order to progress to "Unlimited," all you have to do is complete the tutorial.  Check out the #tutorial channel for more information.

Multiple Characters

You may retire a character at any time for any reason.  If you do, you can make a new one and keep up to half the points you earned on the old one.  Your own characters can tie in together and even interact if you would enjoy that, as long as it's not done for power.  You do not gain experience from Backstory connections with your own characters, and they don't count toward the three connections you are required to make.  You should generally try to avoid using Leverage and True Names against your own characters, but if you do, you do not earn experience for it.

Characters should make sense.

All characters must have backstories that make sense for their starting point values.  Characters are not very strong or experienced at the start of play. The recommended age is 18-26. Anything you build into your character must either be physiologically possible, or have a supernatural explanation, which you must specify.

Etiquette

Entering Scenes

  • Before entering an ongoing scene, make sure it's okay with those present.  They may be trying to set something up in particular.
  • Please also be aware of any ambient details (time of day, what's going on in the scene, where exactly everyone is, etc.) before entering the scene.
  • Keep all game-related discussions in the server.
  • Give your scene buddies some time to respond. Some of us respond slowly. Sometimes a gentle reminder ping is in order.

Please don't DM staff with server things.

  • If you have a question or need something, the public help channels are your first line of defense.  If it's something that CAN be handled in a public channel, please do. Someone else might have the same question or issue.
  • Please do not DM staff with server-related questions (though if you just want to chat, you're welcome to DM us!).  If you need to bring something up that you're not comfortable with all members of staff seeing, please use the ModMail bot. Just send a DM to the bot directly, and it will take you through the process.

Inactivity and Leaving

CAWT is very important to us. If you need time away, that's perfectly fine! However, if you are away for an extended period of time, we cannot put the story on hold for you. You may be left behind IC. If you know you will be away for more than a day or two, please let staff know.  If it's been 48 hours or more without either an in-character post or a notification to staff that you need some time, we will assume you are inactive and may need to move on.

During this period, the Storycrafters reserve the right to resolve your scenes as needed.  If you've been gone long enough, we may need to find an in-story reason to explain your character's absence. We will try to find the least invasive way to handle this, and it will never be permanent character death.

If you would like to return after a period of inactivity, we are happy to work something out IC for you.  You are always welcome to return after a period of inactivity - just talk to staff about how to write you back in!

If you leave the server, we also reserve the right to take over your story as needed to smooth out any wrinkles it creates for others, though we will do so in the least invasive way possible.

Scene Procedures and In-game Time

How to do a scene:

  • Find a scene buddy, or designate your scene as open. Start a new thread in the appropriate RP channel. You can also say something about it in #looking-for-scene
  • In the first post of your scene, make it clear approximately what time of day it is (morning/afternoon/evening/night is good enough) and exactly where you are. You can also specify the date of your scene if this matters to you.
  • RP and have fun!
  • Optional: go to your #journal thread and do a scene reflection about your scene when you're done. You earn XP if you do. More information.

Things to note:

  • As far as scenes go, the date ticks are more of a suggestion, but try not to reach too far into the future or too far into the past. Unless you state otherwise, a scene is assumed to have happened on the in-game date you finished it.
  • You can have the same character appearing in two scenes at once, as long as they are occurring at different times.  Use your best judgement here.
  • Since each scene has its own thread, you don't need to worry about whether someone is already using the RP channel you want.
  • Date ticks happen once per three IRL days.  You can look at the #journals channel to see the current date and weather forecast.
