But before we dive into too many options and specifics, I want each of you to settle on a core concept—and in particular, to explain what you're doing in Threshold and why you aren't going to just leave if the going gets tough. And as I said, I want to think fantasy western. Here's a few examples...
  • The Sheriff. Uphold the law!
  • The Town Preacher. Looking out for the spiritual wellbeing of the town.
  • The Blacksmith. You're not looking for a fight, but you have a hammer and you're not afraid to use it.
  • The Bounty Hunter. You're here between jobs, but you've always got your eyes open.
  • The Company Man. You're here as an agent of one of the Dragonmarked houses—or perhaps you work for Honoria Soldorak, the richest woman in town.
  • The Exile. There's a nation of monsters to the west. You're a monster, but for some reason you've left your home behind.
  • The Entertainer. You work at the local inn. Play it again, Sam.
  • The Missionary. You follow an obscure faith that doesn't have a following in town, but you'd like to change that.
  • The Mysterious Stranger. You're a person who has impressive skills, but you don't like to talk about how you came by them. You're hiding out from a past that's about to catch up with you...
  • The Old Soldier. You used to be a soldier or a marshal. You thought you left that life behind, but now they're going to pull you back in.
  • The Reporter. There's a story here, see?
  • The Scholar. There's a lot of interesting old ruins and history around here. As a wizard, sage, or artificer you could be here to look into it—and maybe you act as the schoolteacher as well.
  • The Spy. You're keeping an eye on the frontier for SOMEONE.
  • The Visionary. You're guided by divine visions or mysterious dreams, and they've led you here.
  • The Wandslinger. You're a dashing rake with a heart of gold and the fastest wand in the west.
