Expedition 39b - Koko's Account

By morning the racket had subsided and the crew ventured into the great hall, making our way towards the portcullis trap, with the intention of going down and under the noisy room. One speculated that the shrieking plants would have roots that we could sever to kill them, and underneath was the route to take.

As we descended past the burnt corpses of the creatures we had flamed last time, a room to one side revealed a nasty sight, rotting bodies scattered around, the thief took a liking to some quick looting, but as he dug into the cadavers, a pile of worms swarmed around, some of them jumping on to him.

One worm burrowed under his skin, but a handy touch of flame from his torch, causing a yelp of pain, but ejecting a husk of maggot, probably saved him from certain wormy death. The others were given the same treatment, a roasting of mealworms.

Some more of the hulk like creatures we had bested before with fire sprung from a side door, we overcame them without difficulty and they surrendered, the consensus was not to spare them but not before they told of more melodic mushrooms to avoid, so we followed the corridor further to another room with discarded statues.

A small door opened into a cavernous area with more statues and pillars and a great chasm in the middle, when suddenly the air filled with glorious song, and the crew began to wander aimlessly, from above the flapping of wings ushered three nasty looking bird women, the source of the wailing, at once I realised my companions were all enamoured by these creatures and I brought forth the shield of battle and clattered it as hard as I could, the winged wenches shrieked and flew off.

I was left with a bunch of aimless wanderers who shuffled to the edge of the chasm, waiting for their beloved to return, except the dog who whimpered at her master, when suddenly a voice from above called out, a straggly man and two green humanoids emerged from an upper room open to the chasm, they seemed unaffected by the sirens and a cordial chat managed to get them to join me, they entered the cavern by a secret door.

I decided to fetch my thief from the camp and find some bait to lure them down to kill them and break the spell,  made my way up stairs, avoiding the trap but coming face on to a great spider who was making a nest in the entrance hall, the dog and I dashed up the main stair and out avoiding the angry arachnid, to join with the thief.

Armed with lit oil flasks we cautiously made our way down, when the spider scuttled towards us, but the oil did its job and crisped the creature, and so we made our way down grabbing some rotten limbs from the side room to use as bait. Once returned the hapless crew were still staring into air, so I took the thief, the dog, and my new companions via the secret door to the upper room and planned how to lure and kill the harpies and free the trapped minds.

The bait worked, the three wicked winged women descended to our trap, a casting of a spell of silence negated their sultry screams, one was scared by my spell of fear, and a barrage of fire bombs made short work of the other two feathered hides, and as luck would have it, this released some of my companions from their stupor.

We descended again to meet up and decide what to do, unfortunately my retinue was still under the charm of the remaining siren, we planned our next move.
