When nobody in the party responded to the initial query, the brusque voice repeated herself, louder and slower. Eventually the adventurers tried to pass themselves off as contracted cleaners fallen foul of a trap. The speaker sounded amused at this tale and didn’t delve too deeply. She departed and before long several of the group began to recover their vision. While they waited for the rest of their companions to also be able to see, they tested out a few theories as to how to manage the Corridor of Mirrors, eventually realising that simply opening a door again would bring all the light back naturally.
They tried one door leading off the corridor and found themselves in a smaller, much less grand corridor furnished in wood rather than marble, with a further trio of doors. Hearing the sound of something moving around behind one of them, they tried the other two first, finding nothing but silk bedding and linen in one and the other containing a curious stone chest, further investigation of which was hampered by the party’s inexplicable reluctance to put into action any of the plans to bypass the green substance covering the floor or the black ceiling. Koko’s spider-climbing boots would have to wait a while longer before seeing their first use.
Trying the third door the adventurers were met with the glinting eyes of several large spiders. They slammed the door shut but had noticed something else glinting amongst the webs. As they prepared to go back in, the door opened before them courtesy of one hairy spider leg, and suddenly Rarder felt a foreign mind try to overwhelm his own. To everyone’s relief he fought off the charm, but two of their retains also slumped down in an enchanted slumber, and as the adventurers started hacking at the visible arachnids the room suddenly looked a lot more populated than they’d been expecting.
“Just an illusion!” Rarder roared as he led the hacking, and sure enough, as the third spider was pulled from its grip on the wall and slaughtered, the rest of the masses vanished. Cutting through the webs, the company pocketed some gems and jewellery and returned to the Corridor of Mirrors.
As they made their way down the corridor the doors and shutters all slammed shut again, plunging the party into darkness, only this time several of them felt blows from some unseen sources impact their armour. The infra-seeing dwarves lead the party in a dash towards the next door, flinging it open to bring back the light and rushing everyone inside to what appeared to be some form of luxurious bedroom. They weren’t quick enough to stop their assailants from following, and several shadowy figures flitted in after them.
Koko’s attempt to turn them did nothing, so the party set about sorting the issue out with their arsenal of magic weapons. Soon the figures had all disappeared beneath the arcane blades and the adventurers sat back to regain their breath.
They were interrupted by a sleepy voice coming from the curtained four-poster bed along the opposite wall: “Who is it?”
