The Ritual of One Hundred Candles

Ritual

This folk ritual in villages common across Valoria and The Thousand Isles, often to commemorate the Winter Solstice. A variant of it can also be found in Great Mbo.

It is performed as follows. As night falls, usually a night of the crescent moon or the Winter Solstice, a group gathers in a house, one with two separate rooms. To begin the ritual participants light 100 candles in the second room and position a single mirror on the surface of a small table.

When the sky was at its darkest, guests gathered in the first of the two rooms, take turns orating tales of ghoulish encounters and reciting folkloric tales passed on by villagers who claimed to have experienced supernatural encounters. Upon the end of each story, the story-teller would enter the second room and extinguish one candle, look in the mirror and make their way back to the first room. With each passing tale, the room slowly grew darker and darker as the participants reached the one hundredth tale, creating a safe haven for the evocation of spirits.

However, as the game reached the ninety-ninth tale, many villages would stop, fearful of invoking the spirits they had been summoning.

Books of the River Variant

The seventh volume of The Books of the River has an appendix that details a variant of this ritual.

The last part of the book, which seems to have been added later, details a variant on a common ritual, called The Ritual of One Hundred Candles. The variant requires the ritual be performed on a ship at sea, out of sight of land, during a night of the crescent moon. The entire crew must participate. When the final candle is extinguished, the book claims the ship will be transported into the The Shadowlands.
