DE RE METALLICA

TRANSLATED FROM THE FIRST ANNISH EDITION OF 1232

De Re Metallica (Old Annish for On the Nature of Metals (Minerals) is a book originally written in Old Annish, cataloguing the state of the art of mining, refining, and smelting metals, The author was a dwarf of the Erithor Mountains named Georg Bauer, whose pen name was the Old Annish'zied Georgius Agricola. The book is the current authoritative text on mining in the The Thousand Isles. It is also an important chemistry and engineering text, with a chapter on using waterpower, windpower, and steampower to power mining engines.

The Atmospheric Engine

The final chapter of the book deals with motive power for the devices detailed earlier. The final pages seem to be written in a different hand, and are signed by someone called Newcomen Stonebreaker.

In addition to animal, water and wind powered devices, The Engine chapter details a device that is referred to as the The Atmospheric Engine or the Stonebreaker Engine. This engine burns coal to heat water into steam, which them moves pistons to provide power. While there are designs found in De Re Metallica that harness steam as the motive power for machines, Newt iterated and advanced those architectures significantly, into something far more functional.

Sections on Metallurgy, Mining and Tools

These sections details best practices around the actual art of digging mine shafts, the tools used and copious lore around finding and identifying seams of ore
