Bardic Necromancy

Magical Tradition

Bardic Necromancy was a magical tradition practiced extensively in the Annwyn Empire. The tradition specialized in the binding and harnessing of human spirits to create magical enchantments and effects. The key to the practice was found in careful, sometimes years long preparation of the host object, objects constructed of fine and magical materials, and carefully crafted to prepare them for receiving the spirts.

Precious metals, gems, crystals and magical wood such as Lignum Vitae were used to craft these recipticals.

Once the receptacle was ready, the spirt was imprisoned, usually at the exact time of death, through a single very special song, currently lost in the time, called The Gale.

While these enchantments did require human sacrifice to power them, they were completely impotent if the sacrifice was unwilling. The most powerful of the enchantments also required the sacrifice victim to be of pure, Annish blood, some even requiring royal bloodlines to function

A a result the Annish nobility was far and away the most common target for these spells. The Ann cultivated an ethical code called "The Dutythat demanded their loyalty to the empire in both life and death. If required, both men and women would eagerly volunteer for such service. Volunteering for such duty was often a path chosen by Annish nobilty who felt their honor had been besmirched, or were accused of crimes.
