Guild Upgrades

Campaign Guide

As your adventurers travel throughout the world, they'll grow. They'll gain levels. They'll find and use new equipment. They'll make allies (and enemies) and gain influence.

Their successes and failures will also impact the overall guild. At the start of the East Marches campaign, the guild is a loose collection of adventurers who were all summoned in various ways to a floating island off the western shores of Aelintir, in halls that once belonged to an adventurer's guild that faded away centuries ago. Each adventure completed brings notoriety and capital to the new guild, which will allow it to expand its reach, to rebuild the once-forlorn buildings on the island, and to hire non-adventuring members to help run the day-to-day operations.

How do Guild Upgrades work?

Adventurers within the guild can pool their earnings to fund upgrades to certain areas of the guild, which in turn can provide new bonuses, buffs, and services to guild members. The guild upgrade system is styled like a skill tree with eight separate upgrade paths representing a different area and producing its own set of relevant upgrades arranged into tiers. These paths often intermingle and an upgrade in one area may require that an upgrade in another area be purchased first. The eight upgrade paths are as follows:

  • Guild Hall - The primary upgrade path that focuses on improvements to the core guild facilities and the overall island. This path is available immediately and progressing through it is the only way to unlock some of the other upgrade paths.
  • Logistics - This path focuses on expanding the reach of the guild. Some upgrades allow adventurers to travel farther, opening up new areas for DMs to run games in, while others bring NPCs into the fold that further the guild's influence. This path is available immediately.
  • Supplier - This path focuses on expanding the wares of the guild's supply shop run by the guild quartermaster. Advancement through this path can lower the cost of goods sold by the quartermaster. This path is available immediately and carries a number of prerequisites for the Blacksmith path.
  • Unknown - This path focuses on the means of purchasing, forging, and improving weapons and armor. Progressing through the tree can provide adventurers with better gear, from simple silvered weapons to powerful magical weapons. This path is unlocked starting at Tier 2 following the purchase of the Restoration upgrade in the Guild Hall path.
  • Temple - This path focuses on the expansion of the temple and its divine spellcasting services. Progressing down this path opens up options for curing ailments and even bringing fallen comrades back from death. Restoring the temple can also eventually yield powerful blessings to the truly penitent. This path is unlocked starting at Tier 2 following the purchase of the Restoration upgrade in the Guild Hall path.
  • Alchemist's Workshop - This path focuses on upgrades to the workshop and its ability to brew and provide various potions to adventurers. Progressing through this path offers a greater selection of potions as well as some discounts on the more important ones. This path is unlocked starting at Tier 2 following the purchase of the Restoration upgrade in the Guild Hall path.
  • Arcane Tower - This path focuses on the restoration of the old arcane tower. Progressing through this path can allow the guild to start producing and offering magic items for sale - from simple scrolls to more powerful items. This path is unlocked starting at Tier 4 following the purchase of the Continued Restoration upgrade in the Guild Hall path.
  • Academy - This path focuses on improving the capabilities of the adventurers themselves. Progressing through this path allows to guild to hire instructors that can improve the skills of adventurers - from learning languages to weapons training and even learning a whole new skill. This path is unlocked starting at Tier 4 following the purchase of the Continued Restoration upgrade in the Guild Hall path.

Progressing Through the Upgrade Tree

The overall tree features eleven tiers of upgrades, with first tier upgrades being the weakest and the final tiers offering game-changing upgrades for the guild. Each upgrade path typically has anywhere from 0-2 upgrades per tier and the progression is linear - e.g. to be eligible to purchase a Tier 3 upgrade in the Guild Hall, all upgrades in the Guild Hall's two previous tiers must be purchased first.

While each path progressed in a linear fashion overall, some upgrades require that you purchase a specific upgrade from another path. As an example, the Supplier path's Tier 3 upgrade, Special Order, requires the purchase of the Tier 2 Logistics upgrade Errand Boys in addition to the Tier 1 and 2 upgrades in the Supplier Path.

Other Requirements

Some upgrades will require more than just simple gold to unlock. Adventurers may have to team up and complete a certain predetermined quest into order to fully unlock a particular upgrade or the guild may have to satisfy some other requirement as a group. Additionally, each tier of the upgrade tree boasts a certain level requirement. All level requirements are based on the highest-level character in the guild, so a tier becomes available as soon as one person in the guild meets the requirement.

The guild will only be able to see one locked tier beyond what it currently has unlocked, and the upgrades in the locked tier will lack descriptions until a guild member meets the level requirement to unlock that tier.

How to Purchase

Once the guild meets all applicable prerequisites to purchase an upgrade, adventurers may pool their gold and present it to Caretaker Balthus in the #guild-business channel of the discord server. The gold will be subtracted from the character's player sheets and the upgrade will officially become active.
