Chapter 4.3 - The Gang assault the walls of Highcliffe

After the party flee the Lockheart estate, they encounter Buu on his way back from a long and interesting night out on the town. They retreat to their original lodgings and collect Asiris and Momon, then find new dwellings in the mid ring.

Buu recounts his evening and shares his increasing concern about his axe. After being involved in a contest of strength that  left a crippled orc bleeding on the floor of the tavern, he was turned out onto the street and separated from Kiri. A gnome enchanter (Naairon), hesitantly recommended by a local smith, has demonstrated his ability to remove the affliction from the weapon but asks for help with his own problem in return. A staff was stolen from him some time ago and he has been unable to retrieve it. He has indicated that a properly motivated crew with specific skills may be able to succeed.  The item he is after is an ornate staff that has been sealed away in a tower - the great lighthouse of Highcliffe. He has requested that Buu assemble a crew and meet him the following evening at the Whitestone tavern to discuss the matter further.

Rustok becomes violently ill from the Malberries and is indisposed. Z and Remus stay with him while Digby scouts from the sky. Buu and Deets decide to try to gain access to the lighthouse to gain information for the heist. Kiri sends a message to Buu, who relays the parties current whereabouts. She takes a carriage from the estate to one of the main squares in an attempt to meet up with them near the lighthouse.

When Buu and Deets reach the wall surrounding the keep,  they are stopped at the gate by two guards (Ronald & Reginald). Buu offers 12 gold in return for a look at the tower - the two guards confer and then accept his proposal. After pocketing the coin, Ron instructs them to back up and take a good long look because that’s as close as they are getting. Outraged at being swindled in this fashion and feeling the offical complaint document is farcical, Buu attempts to snatch back his coin from the guards pouch. This initiates a scuffle that quickly escalates as his rage intensifies and the wild magic that accompanies it summons a flumph that explodes, knocking Ron to the ground forcefully.

Deets gets involved by first punching Reggie in the back of his helmet, then beating him to his knees with the Tzar Stick. The alarm is raised by the captain on the wall. He begins blowing a whistle of an odd, almost muffled, pitch. Upon seeing more guards rushing out of the gatehouse, Deets turns and dashes back towards the buildings. Although the approach to the gatehouse was pleasant, the 400ft of open landscape now feels too dangerous and exposed. Following his lead, Buu also abandons the scuffle and takes off running, quickly overtaking Deets in the process. Another pair of guards rush out of the gatehouse and fall in behind the four already pursuing the duo.

Archers on the wall begin to fire bolas from heavy crossbows in an attempt to stops them. Deets, falling behind, manages to catch one of the bolas. The effort comes at a cost and the guards gain ground. Boo has crossed the halfway point when the broad head of a bolt pierces his left arm and sends a spray of sand into the air. Deets angles off the left in an attempt to split the pursuit but is followed by all six guards. Up ahead, Boo is confronted by the sight of six guards rushing up the Main Street to station themselves at the junction ahead. In the windows of the cafes to either side, he can see the wealthy of the city tittering at the excitement and cheering for the noble captain Marcus, high upon the wall.

Boo advances on the guards ahead and attempts to divert along the boulevard. His advance is halted by the sudden arrival of two mounted guardsmen that ensnare him inside a weighted net. Surrendering to his rage and the call of the grunge within, Boo assumes his diminutive form and rips free of the net, bounding up the sheer 30ft walls of the building nearby and swings himself over the top lip. He makes haste in fleeing the scene as swiftly and stealthily as possible across the rooftops. The guards look on in shock at first but quickly turn their attention to the lone form of Deets. The horsemen approach at speed but before they can attack Deets hurls his bola. While the throw is wild, he uses the brief distraction to rush the guard and knock him from his mount with his Tzar stick while unleashing three punishing charges into the man.

Deets takes some minor wounds from the advancing horde but swings himself astride the mount and spurs it to action. The captain rallies and follows in close pursuit. A poorly timed feint from Deets provides the captain with the perfect opportunity and his man catcher snaps into place around the neck of the fleeing man. In desperation, Deets jams the handle of his trusty Fang between his throat and the pointy spikes of the collar, forcing the rear spikes into his neck. Stopping his horse abruptly, he manages to dismount the rider at the other end of the pole, but suffers worse in the process. He is flung from his horse as the weight of the guard is pushed squarely into the end of the pole. He hits the ground hard and manages one last look at the approaching foes as darkness sweeps over his vision…
