Shifters are sometimes called the weretouched, as many believe that they are the descendants of humans and lycanthropes. They are humanoids with a bestial aspect; while they cannot fully change shape they can temporarily enhance their animalistic features – a state they call shifting. Whatever their origins, shifters have evolved into a unique race. A shifter walks on the knife’s edge between the wilds and the world around them.

The Shifters have inhabited Northern Falanar, preferring the colder climates, surrounded by woodlands. They are a nomadic people, following the herds that they hunt and gathering what they can along the way. They revere their wolf primal first and foremost.

History of the Shifters: Part I

As the Shifters grew in number, they began to take too much from the world around them. Seeing that her children needed to be reminded of the vital balance of prey and predator, she blessed one of the fiercest predators in the forest with the gift of sentience: thus, Owlbears were granted a mind and charged with guarding the natural world, becoming a good-natured people that value balance. 

After a time, a subrace of the Shifters came into being, civilized and more knowledgeable in the use of tools, especially for hunting. Wood Elves began to populate the woods, learning how to live with or against the Owlbears, as the Shifters were pushed further north.
