Short summary:

A group was dispatched to scout the Spire Hills and make it safer. A nest of a mated pair of Hippogriffs (who may have been mimicking cries for help) was found and eliminated. Inside they found a dead Bugbear. The party retrieved the pair's egg and brought it to First Landing.

A record of events which occurred during the travels of Azzit, CartoqKayzenKillian, and Lazz'Ru exploring the Spire Hills, as transcribed by Killian, with addendums by Cartoq, Azzit, Kayzen, and Lazz’Ru.

We set off from First Landing to the West, towards the Spire Hills, to scout the area and clear it of hostile creatures. Unlike our last journey, this one was a pleasant stroll with clear skies and not a snake in sight. Masters Kayzen and Cartoq warned us that the dominant creatures in a hilly area such as this would be flying enemies, and they were proved correct!

On the second day of our scouting, we heard screams in an unknown language coming from the top of a nearby hill. We were briefly concerned, as we’d run into a creature that mimicked cries for help, but decided to rush over anyway to see if we could help. We were attacked by a large winged beast that swooped past us, slashing Master Kayzen!

You missed the fact that it intended myself to be a target as well. This time I was quick enough to evade its claws.

Kayzen and Cartoq fired arrows and I attempted to blast it away with wind, but only a single arrow struck. Master Azzit found more success with his frost elixir freezing the creature. Master Lazz’Ru raised the illusion of a stone wall around us, which confused the creature into circling without attacking, before Kayzen’s arrow and another gust of wind from myself broke the creature.

Cartoq ran up the hill to try and save whatever creature had screamed, but encountered another beast! It mauled him badly. As the rest of the party scrambled up the hill behind him, he retreated to be healed. Kayzen led the counterattack into the nest, followed by Azzit who was unfortunately just too late to save the victim, a Unknown.

Hey, I also got back into the fray, no time to lick one’s wounds too long when it can hit you like that!

- Cartoq

Lazz’Ru entered the nest and dazzled the creature with light while I likewise intimidated it with fire. Kayzen delivered a mighty series of blows, and Azzit’s bomb grazed it with more freezing liquid. The creature’s counterattacks were too weak to penetrate mine or Cartoq’s defenses, only grazing Lazz’Ru, who then slayed it with lightning.

I was lucky it was only a graze, the size of the beast it may have been able to take more than half of myself into its beak.

It turned out that the pair of creatures was a nesting, mated pair caring for an egg. It is unfortunate that we had to kill such majestic creatures, but they were a threat to any traveller in the area, as evidenced by the dead Bugbear. We have recovered the egg and will try and treat it well.

Curiously, there were petrified present boxes in the nest, with our names on them! I attempted to open mine, but it was sealed shut. This is a most bizarre occurrence, though a subtle feeling tells me it may have to do with the Unknown  Harlequin

I am less sure of this due to the lack of mist in the region prior to our encounter with the hippogriffs, but it warrants consideration.

It also warrants a bit of suspicion. Finding all that THERE was very curious if you are an optimist or quite suspicious if you are a pessimist. And what even HAS the power to petrify stuff?
