Bluesteel, known scientifically as blenium and colloquially as bluemetal, is a steel-like alloy first produced in the medieval Oceanykan period by Ferozen metallurgists working with bluetrite, an endemic mineral found across the continent and in limited deposits in New Zealand. Bluetrite's unusual composition, a naturally occurring amalgam rich in titanium and tungsten compounds that should not form in stable geological conditions, produces, when smelted and alloyed, a metal with properties significantly superior to conventional steel across nearly every industrial metric.

Blenium presents a melting point considerably higher than most steel alloys, exceptional resistance to mechanical stress, and a degree of elasticity that prevents catastrophic brittle failure under impact, a limitation that plagues conventional hardened steels. Its density is comparable to standard structural steel, making it a straightforward substitution in most engineering contexts where weight is not the primary constraint.

The difficulty is in the working. Bluesteel is notoriously hard to machine, weld, or forge using conventional methods; it requires higher temperatures, specialist tooling, and significantly more time than equivalent steel work. Historically, only a specialised minority of Ferozen blacksmiths dealt with it, and it was reserved for the finest weapons, armour, and structural components. In the 1960s, Oceanykan industry has developed industrial-scale blueforging techniques, but production volume remains limited by bluetrite availability and the skilled labour bottleneck.

Bluesteel is in limited use for high-value military and industrial applications: vehicle armour, structural frames for large vessels, and specialist small-arms components. Its export is federally restricted.
