The BAR's employment philosophy was somewhat outdated at its introduction. American autoriflemen were expected to slowly march towards Central Powers trenches while unloading bursts of fire from the hip. While this never proved practical, the BAR was found to be an excellent weapon for going on the assault, a trait that would become more relevant in the next war.
