Most artillery in the years leading up to the Great War was fairly similar, and in some cases, produced by the same manufacturer on both sides. At the war's outbreak, it was quickly found that existing artillery doctrine was severely outdated, and new methods had to be developed. In the meantime, most artillery fire devolved into slugfests where both sides would dump millions of shells into enemy lines and hope for the best. Many infantrymen would go mad from the constant bombardment.
