Appearance

A towering, broad-shouldered man who looks as though he were born to a stormy deck rather than a dry cave. Zorrel's face is half-hidden behind a bushy, black beard. His left eye is a sunken, puckered wound, covered only by a crude, flesh-ragged scar. Heavy golden hoops dangle from both ears, and he wears the iconic Ghost Beggars’ checkered scarf wrapped tightly about his head.
His battered, dented plate armor, stolen from a defeated mercenary years ago, adds to his already massive bulk. His long, callused hands always seem to be resting lightly on the hilt of his sword.

Personality

Zorrel Gnast rules his cutthroat band like a seasoned ship captain — with charm and a hidden iron fist. He freely distributes spoils among his men, rewarding loyalty and success, but ruthlessly strikes down anyone who challenges his orders.

Though he views the highwaymen now among his ranks as lesser creatures, Zorrel tolerates them, knowing times are lean.

Despite his brutal surface, Zorrel harbors a deep, painful loyalty to family. His hidden mission — unknown to even his most trusted lieutenants — is to rescue or end his sister Esmalia, now cursed as a wererat somewhere within the dungeon depths of Stonehell.

He often joins his men on "liberty runs" to Kobold Korners, buying rounds and gathering whispered rumors, desperately trying to find the lair of the wererats.

Special Equipment

  • Short Sword +1/+2 vs. Lycanthropes: Hidden in his private chest (Room #13). Meant for a last, grim encounter with his sister, if necessary.

  • Plate Armor: Dented but serviceable, grants AC 3.

  • Ghost Beggars’ Scarf: A mark of leadership and membership in his brigand band.

Secret Mission

Zorrel’s growing obsession with finding and either saving or killing his sister Esmalia gnaws at his soul.

If he learns where the wererats lair, he will rally his brigands for an all-out attack, spinning a tale of hidden treasure to motivate them. This expedition is likely doomed — a bloody ambush by the lycanthropes almost certain — and even if Zorrel survives, his band will not.

If players learn of Zorrel’s true mission and leverage it (either by helping or hindering), it could profoundly change the balance of power among the surface brigands, and even inside Stonehell itself.

Combat Notes

  • Zorrel fights aggressively but not foolishly.

  • If reduced below 8 hit points, he will attempt to retreat, fighting defensively while barking orders for the remaining Ghost Beggars to cover his escape.

  • If faced with lycanthropes, he fights with cold, almost mechanical fury.

Adventure Hooks

  • Negotiation: PCs could bargain with Zorrel, trading information about the wererats for loot, favors, or future alliances.

  • Betrayal: Once his sister is dealt with (one way or another), Zorrel could become a useful — or dangerous — wild card in the dungeon's broader faction wars.

  • Redemption or Damnation: Clever roleplay might save Zorrel from his dark path... or drive him deeper into it.
