🏴‍☠️ The Ghost Beggars

"Not every danger beneath Stonehell wears fangs and scales. Some walk on two legs, speak your tongue, and smile before they draw their blades."

Overview

The Ghost Beggars are a rough gang of thieves, robbers, and cutthroats who've made the area around Stonehell their hideaway. Isolated from prying eyes, yet close enough to ambush treasure-hunters and caravans, the area serves them well. Better still, their secret dealings with swamp smugglers allow them to trade stolen goods for weapons, supplies, and hard coin.

Recently, however, things have not gone well for the Beggars. A bungled robbery of a Warden Ranger caravan cost them dearly — nearly half their number fell to sword and arrow. Now the Ghost Beggars lick their wounds, biding their time, bolstering their ranks with desperate highwaymen and would-be bandits willing to risk all for a share of stolen silver.

The Caves

The caves themselves are old and dry, carved by water that has long since fled. Dust hangs heavy in the air, and the floor is littered with the broken bones of ancient stalactites and crumbling stone formations. It's a place where sound carries strangely, and shadows linger longer than they should.

Membership

The Ghost Beggars are entirely human, most clad in leather or chainmail, wielding swords, bows, clubs, and daggers.

  • Half of them favor short swords and short bows, protected by battered leather armor and shields.

  • The others prefer longswords and wear chainmail and shields into battle.

  • The newer recruits — the highwaymen — are less skilled and poorly armed, often fighting only with clubs, daggers, and short swords, dressed in worn leather jerkins.

Though their gear is varied, all Ghost Beggars bear a single unifying mark: a strip of black and yellow checkered cloth, worn as a scarf, headband, sash, or mask.
This strange pattern serves as both a symbol of their gang — and a practical matter of survival.

What the Locals Say

  • "You can tell a Ghost Beggar by the checkered cloth they wear — black and yellow, like a wasp's sting."

  • "They're not monsters. They're worse. A monster eats you because it's hungry. The Beggars slit your throat for the shine in your purse."

  • "They say their leader, a big brute named Gnast, is looking for something down in Stonehell. Something personal."
